Chamber Music Institute

The American Festival for the Arts (AFA) is a fantastic organization dedicated to providing musical enrichment experiences to students throughout Houston. I have been a faculty member for their Chamber Music Institute for two years now and I've got to say, it's a fantastic opportunity and experience! Auditions will be happening in January for the spring semester 2021. Auditions consist of sight-reading, a scale, and a solo of your choice.

What is Chamber Music

Chamber music is a small ensemble, typically 2-5 musicians, with only one person playing each part. Examples of a chamber music ensemble include but are not limited to: a string quartet (which consists of 2 violins, a viola and cello) a string trio (which can be a violin, viola, cello, or 2 violins with 1 viola) or a piano trio (violin, cello and piano). Each ensemble rehearses with a faculty member once a week for approximately 2 hours. At the end of the semester, AFA organizes a student recital where chamber music groups can perform the pieces they've worked on. This is a different opportunity than private lessons or orchestra. Auditions are in January 2021.
